Repair & Refurbishment
COC Aerospace Introduces Repairing Main Wing Panel
p/n 14-23010-703 Northrop F-5E & F
Damage to Upper Wing Skin – New SkinRequired
COC’s Patented Aero-Structure Fixture for Main Wing Panel
Fixture designed to ‘Lock-In’ all of the 9 Wing Station Substructures to prevent movement of all wing components
COC’s proprietary Wing Repair Fixture
Wing Rib Supports allow removal of both Upper and Lower Wing Skins while maintaining Wing Frame components and fastener hole locations.
Wings are installed into COC Wing Frame
Once locked in place, the wings are monitored with laser scanners to detect any movement as the wing is being disassembled.
Inspections
Inspection of the main wing panel includes Radiographic inspections of the skins, ribs and spars. Inspection procedures are from NAVAIR 01-F5AAA-36
Fastener Identification Schematic
Omniscan’s AFIS
COC uses Omniscan’s AFIS to inspect wing fasteners without removing fasteners.
Detail of Scan and Representable Instrument Layout
Detail of Typical Inspection Area and Applying AFIS scanner
“AFIS” (Automated Fastener Hole Inspection System) built around the popular OmniScan portable phased array system
Omniscan’s AFIS has been used to inspect u and lower wing skin fasteners on F-5 aircraft
The particular application to be solved with the AFIS was cracking at the Countersink and Faying surfaces in particular areas on the aluminum skin of the aircraft known to have these issues. Both aircraft suffered similar issues, with a main difference being that one aircraft had flush fastener heads and the other raised head and flush fastener types. Areas to be inspected were on the upper & lower wing skin of Northrop F-5 aircraft.
Skin, Ribs, Spar thicknesses
COC Uses Advanced ultrasonic thickness gauge from Olympus to measure wing skin thicknesses.
The Olympus 72DL PLUSTM ultrasonic thickness gauge delivers precision thickness measurements at high speed in a portable, easy-to-use device.
With fast scanning, advanced algorithms, and our lowest-ever minimum thickness capability, you can confidently measure the thickness of very thin layers in the most challenging applications.
Follow COC Work Cards for Wing Installation into COC Wing Fixture.
Incorporate DRIFT NESTS and calibrate laser scanner.
Laser Scanner and Track Ball
Using a Laser Scanner and Track Ball, Fastener Holes are located and measured on existing skin.
The scan data is then converted into machining program for drilling holes in the new replacement skin.
Follow COC Work Cards to Complete Wing Inspection
Continue Wing Inspections per T.O and COC Work Cards
Laser Scan is converted to CAD file
All of the fastener locations are identified. Accuracy is to +/- 0.002”
Replacement Skins Drilled
Once all holes are identified, the new replacement skins can be drilled out to match the wing skin being replaced.
Securing Wing Frame
Specially designed supports in the Wing Fixture Secure WingFrame in each subsection of the wing assembly.
